Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship


The Cognitive Neuroscience of Communication Lab at Wilfrid Laurier University, under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Jones is seeking a potential candidate for the Vanier Canada Scholarship program. The Vanier is a prestigious scholarship offered by the Government of Canada to attract and retain world-class doctoral students. There are 167 awardees each year. 


Value and Duration of Award


  • $50,000 per year for three years



The candidate will have many of the qualities and experiences listed below:


  • Successful candidates should have a Master of Science degree in psychology, neuroscience, life sciences, biomedical science, engineering or a related discipline.


  • Ideal candidates will have an affinity for data analysis and programming, and possess signal processing experience, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think independently.


  • Research topics in the lab include, but are not limited to: vocal production/perception; motor control; phonetic convergence; EEG markers of disease or disorders; vigilence / cognitive load / meditation; communication disorders; language processing; audiovisual speech perception (and/or eye gaze)


  • We use EEG/ERP techniques regularly so experience with EEG/ERP would be a significant asset. Alternative experience could include fMRI (or TMS). At minimum, the applicant should have training and experience with signal processing and statistical data analysis.


  • Demonstrable programming skills in Matlab (or another programming language)


  • Other valued skills include behavioral testing using an eye-tracker and computational modeling.


  • Demonstration of research potential through evidence of their previous research contributions and ideally contributions to research publications in international journals.


  • Demonstration of academic excellence (transcripts, awards and distinctions)


  • Demonstration of leadership (potential and demonstrated ability in personal achievement, involvement in academic life, volunteerism/community outreach, civic engagement).


  • Demonstrably fluent in oral and written English.
